WALT: try new tasks and new things.

Today for reading Miss Kyla set us to try one of our new tasks which is called Word Story.

For word story, you choose a word you've heard throughout the week that you may not have been familiar with and you research different things about the word such as the definition, words that mean the same etc. 

One thing I enjoy about this task is that you can find out many different things just by focusing on one word. Something I didn't really enjoy was the screencastify past because it wasn't working and it was difficult to film so I left it out.

The Bone Tiki - Multistructural, Week 6.

WALT: think and reflect on some things that the main character in this text we're reading has done.

1.  Write about a choice the main character had to make this week. A choice that the main character, Matt, has had to make this week is whether or not he was going to follow the steps of some random girl that practically saved him from seeing heaven. I think he made the right choice as she's the first person throughout the whole story who has frightened Puarata and I'm thinking she knows what she's doing and maybe, just maybe she knows where she's going and what she's doing. It sounds that this random girl is pretty, and has a great bubbly, caring personality inside of her.

Hopefully Matt has made the right decision of following the strange girl.

The Bone Tiki, Unistructural, Week 6.

WALT: write a plot summary about the parts of our text we've read so far.

It's now Week 6 and I'm up to Chapter 5. As I keep reading and reading the story is getting better and better. What I've discovered so far is......

Matt returns to his home and Puarata is waiting for him and Matt had been napped. Puarata viciously strangled Matt then out of nowhere some mysterious girl comes out on to the street and suddenly frightens Puarata, in fact she frightens him so much he runs. She tend to help Matt and he follows her to some out of it place that I haven't read up to yet. On their journey to their final destination, Matt starts seeing random things and he doesn't recognise anywhere they're going or where they are, and yet it's his hometown. He starts feeling strange things and starts worrying more about what's going to happen to Rikki when he arrives back at his whare or back at the Marae where both their raging fathers are.

That's all I've read for this week but I'm sure to tell you that it's getting more interesting.

The Bone Tiki - Prestructural, Week 6.

WALT:write and explain our predictions about the novel we're studying.

I haven't had much time to catch up on my studies but I've finally completed my predictions for this week....

WEDNESDAY 7TH JUNE, 2017.

This week, my predictions are short & simple. I’m predicting that Rikki gets caught and that he snitches on Matt which will lead him into a big pit of danger. I’m also predicting that when Matt gets to Taupo puarata and his guards will be on a search for him and the pounamu. I hope that Matt gets to Taupo quickly and that he and the bone tiki are all safe and I’m also hoping that they have enough time to plan their net destination so they know where they’re going to next. My personal reading goal for this week is to FINISH 3 CHAPTERS!! I haven’t had much time on my novel studies this term and I’m hoping I can get more reading done!! I’m also hoping to achieve the goal I set myself last time because as I said I didn’t have enough time to achieve it last time.

The Bone Tiki - Prestructural, Week 4.

WALT: write and explain predictions we have about the novel we're studying.

I've completed the Prestructural part for week 4. This part's about the time I've been given and what I want to read as I go on....

TUESDAY 30TH MAY, 2017.

It’s been nearly 4 weeks now and I haven’t really had time to read and get into my book. But, my predictions for this week are the same as last time. I hope that the story gets more interesting and that more drama starts coming in as I get deeper into the storyline. I’m actually still a bit confused about why this pounamu is so  important and precious to many people other than Nanny wai and Aunty Rangi. My goal for this week is to finish the book and get to the bottom of the storyline. But if I’m not able to finish it because of the time I’m given, my goal is to read 20 - 29 pages.

The Bone Tiki - Prestructural, Week 3.

Here is the completed part of the Prestructural part of my novel study....

WEDNESDAY 24TH MAY, 2017.

This week, I’m predicting that now that I’m getting more closer to the end and deeper into the storyline that there’s going to be something big, juicy but really unsafe about to happen and it’s going to be something unexpected. My predictions my two weeks ago have changed so much, there’s nothing to do with a bush so far and they’re not true, country maori people, well this is another prediction of mine because instead of using the word piupiu, they said ‘grass skirt’. What’s kind of confusing me at the moment is that everytime I start a new chapter they’re doing something different and sometimes in a whole new different place. My personal goal for this week is to finish the book and to be able to explain and have proof that I have completed the story and I know what ‘The Bone Tiki’ is all about.

The Bone Tiki - Prestructural, Week 2.

WALT: write a plot summary on what we've read or predicted so far.

It is now week 2 and I've completed the first part of my Prestructural for this week.

FRIDAY 19TH MAY, 2017.

I’m up to chapter 3. I’m predicting that Mat & Rikki ‘borrow’ Rikki’s father’s car, travel to Napier and Mat runs off to Taupo so he and the bone tiki can be hidden and safe. I’m also predicting that they get chased by Puarata and his team. I’m hoping that the novel gets more interesting and makes my blood boil. What’s confusing me at the moment is I don’t understand why the bone tiki is so important yet so all I have to do is keep reading. My personal goal for this week is to find out why the tiki is so important to everyone in the valley.

The Bone Tiki - Unistructural, Week 1.

WALT: write a plot summary based on the story we're currently reading and researching.

As you may or may not know, this term my reading group has been studying a book by David Hair, The Bone Tiki and I've completed the second task of the week. Here is the Unistructural part I've completed....

So far, I’m up to chapter 3. The story is about a young boy, Matiu Douglas, who lives with his single father, Tama Douglas. He’s 15 and goes to Napier Boys High School. His mother lives in taupo and his best friend is a boy named, Rikki. It all starts when his Nanny Wai-Aroha passes away and they have to pay their respects at her tangi but an unwelcome guest arrives and as Tama Douglas is a lawyer, he defend and welcomes Puarata, the unwelcome guest onto their land and marae. He tries to steal a carved, green tiki that belonged to Nanny Wai but it was gratefully passed on to Mat but nobody knows where or who has it. Mat tries to escape and make his way back to Taupo where his mother is, so nobody knows where he or the tiki can be found. He’s only hiding the tiki because he knows that Puarata was not welcomed and it did not belong to him and leaving was the right thing to do in his mind. Others saw it as stealing, but Mat, old Ranginui his Aunty Hine thought otherwise… ( That’s all I’m up to you at the moment.)

Venn Diagram - Cultural & Scientific Knowledge

WALT identify and evaluate the main ideas of a text. 

This week for reading we're learning about the difference between cultural & scientific knowledge. We read an article about both types of knowledge then we made these. One thing I enjoyed about this task was that it was easy understanding and one thing I didn't enjoy was that at first I was stuck but then I read the article over again and I got the hang of it.

This week for SOLO, I've decided to choose an article with meaning to it and as I was scrolling down the Nz Herald Page This Exact article caught my eye. Something I didn't enjoy about this article was that it was taking right to heart. I feel their pain but something I enjoyed about it was that it was perfect to write about and that she is now home safe and sound.

SOLO Current Events

Today we were introduced to a new type of current events. SOLO is the type of events that year 9-13 students use.

Something I enjoyed about this task is that it's fast and easy to sue and something I dislike is that there's only two things to do but next time I will try and extend it.

Candy Floss & Grapes

This week, we were informed that we had to choose an article form the "Random Section" on Kiwi Kids News. The article that I have chosen is called "Grapes that taste like candy floss". What a "WEIRD" article to be writing about right?

One thing I enjoyed about this article is that it had a catchy subject and that it has a good amount of information.
One thing I didn't enjoy was all the reactions on the side. 5 WHOLE people think that it's a bad thing that grapes taste like candy floss like gummon. A way to get your kids to eat healthy.

Date Name To Remember New Zealand War

Black Caps Beat India.

WALT read and report.

Today for S.S.R I was reading about how the Aotearoa Black Caps beat the Men In Blue by a smashing 20 runs in the fourth one-day  cricket international in Ranchi. It now means that the results for the five-match series is 2-2. New Zealand batted first and scored 260 with Martin Guptill who scored 72 points, Kane Williamson who scored 41 points and Tom Latham who scored 39 points giving New Zealand a smashing total. Chasing 261 for a series clinching win, India were all out for 241 with eight balls to spare. India looked firmly n the driver's seat at 127 for 2 but a small batting collapse saw the hosts reduced to 167-7 in the space of a few overs. India never recovered from this and fell 19 runs short. The two teams will now make their way to Visakhapatnam for the series decider on Sunday. 

All I have to say now is Congrats Black Caps & Good luck to both teams for on Sunday.

S.S.R : How Much Screen Time Should We Get ?

What is the right amount of screen time should our kids have these days?

Today for S.S.R the article I was reading about was called "How Much Screen Time Should We Get?
Here's a couple of things I picked up while reading the article:

New Guidelines have been updated to give parents an idea of acceptable screen time. The American Academy of Pediatrics has just issued new suggestions around how much time people should spend watching television and on social media. First thing, they said that on a sunny day, there's small excuse for children being stuck to their devices. However, they've realised that electronic devices are actually really important.  Therefore they put together these guidelines:

- Kids under the age of 18 months should NOT be allowed any screen time.
- Ages from 2 - 5 should only be allowed 1 hour a day & it should be something educational.
-  Any children older than the age of 6, parents should decide.

However, Aotearoa's ministry of education has said that children from the age of 5 to 18 should actually spend less than 2 hours a day - that doesn't include school hours in front of a t.v and on any type of device.

Samsung Gone Wrong !

SAMSUNG GONE WRONG ! 

Omg Guys!

Samsung are no longer selling the newest version of Galaxy Note 7 !

Cause of this ? Because the rumour is, that the "Miracle Phone" has been catching on fire. It was not the first time it happened. The advised customers to turn off the phones and stop using it. In September, the company recalled 2.5 million of them after receiving complaints about the battery exploding. It now appears that the replacement devices may also be faulty, and customers may be advised to turn them off.
Samsung is still investigating, but it's most likely that the problem is to do with the battery. Many smartphones are being powered by "Lithium-Ion Batteries", which are special typed rechargeable batteries. Most companies use them because they allow them to make the phone smaller, more efficient and charge faster. However, this battery has been known to be pretty unstable and may even catch into flames or even explode. Samsung have said that people who purchased and owned the Note 7's are able to return the phone and swap it for another Samsung phone.
Some airlines, like Air New Zealand say you cannot fly with Samsung Phones.

Family Notices.

All around New Zealand, Important people have recently passed away. Some of these stories are really heartbreaking. Here’s some of the stories I’ve crossed over with.

Selwyn Olney.

On 27 July 2016, Mr Selwyn Dudley Olney passed away in Whangarei hospital at the age of 94. He was diagnosed with cancer a while back and did not succeed to fight it. He told his family that his time had come and he is now resting easy in heaven.

He was a beloved Father of Jan and Lez. Beautiful grandfather of Logan, Portia, Tyler and Kade and most of all he was the caring,loving husband and best friend of Ms Mary Olney.

Mr Olney’s memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Morris and Morris Funerals Whau Valley in Whangarei on Monday 1 August, 2016 at 1:30pm followed by a private cremation. Mr Olney’s family and friends are sending donations out to the Cancer society. If anybody wants to send out more flowers or lieus, send them to P.O. Box 8043, Whangarei.

Robert Cortesi.

Mr Robert Antonio Cortesi passed away on 27th July 2016 after short terminal illness. He was a much loved husband of Karen. Beloved dad, grandad and great grandad to many. Family say that Mr Cortesi was a caring man and had a big heart. He tried his best to keep his family happy and was loved so much.

His farewell gathering will be held at 55 fairview road, Rotorua on Monday August 1, 2016. He has much love from all his family and friends.

Gwen Jacobson.

Mrs Gwen Margaret Jacobson passed away at Fraser Manor on 28 July at age 93. She was the sweet and dear wife of of Bill, Loved and caring mum and mother-in-law of Les and the late kathryn, Elaine and Andrew sutherland, Peter and Haidee, Robert and Ann. She was a caring and thoughtful grandmother and great grandmother of 36.

Her service will be held at Elliotts Rosebank Chapel, 25 Ninth Avenue, Tauranga, on Monday 1 August 2016 at 1pm also followed by a private cremation. Please pay your respects if near by.

Mina is a 8 year old Irish girl with Black hair and Skinny pale skin. She loves the night and is very unique in her own way. People judge her but it does not stop her form being herself.
