Black Gold With China !

WALA the different events going on around the world.

Today the article we were assigned to is called "Black Gold". It is about people in China, been made to cut their hair off and let others use it for wigs and other accessories. Here is a couple of things I picked up during learning about this article.

I think this article has hidden messages in between the lines. I think that the message is “Don’t hurt innocent people because of what you want’. NZ Herald said that they searched around the whole of China for the founder or man responsible for the problem and finally found him. No more information about him was added EXCEPT that he was forcing woman and young girls to cut their hair off for his products !

To me, The personal purpose of the article was to get the idea of “Humanity” and “Human Rights” in people’s heads because what’s going on around the world isn’t fair and it isn’t right. Everybody should be able to have a say at what’s going on in their lives and if somebody else makes decisions for them that they don’t want to do or go through with, then they should be able to speak up !
I think the reason why the demand for hair is so high is because the hair used for making products is virgin hair. Virgin hair is when you've never dyed your hair and it's all natural. Also because most people around the world have issues with their sculpts and wigs help out so much ! Wigs also help out when someone has cancer and in need of a wig !
Even though wigs are made in negative ways, they really help out around the world ! If we didn't have wigs, then when people around the world are having health issues and they need one because of the loss of hair, they have to live life until it all grows up without any wig warming up their heads and covering up. Another thing is that girls around the world love to use hair extensions to finish up their hairstyle and without those little girls giving hair all the time, ladies hair styles would be incomplete.
A highlight of this article for me would've been the little poem at the beginning of the article. It goes like this......
"The woman with the new hair looks in the mirror and smiles. Her face is framed by 60cm of caramel blonde. The hair feels just like her own; it looks like her own and smells like her own. But it was bought, not grown. A world away in rural China, the girl who lost her hair looks in the mirror and cries."
One thing I didn't enjoy was reading about what those poor little girls had to go through during there lives. If that was my daughter, I would just die her hair so they didn't take it away from her....
Here is a link to the article I've read today...
I hope you enjoyed reading.

Camp Raglan, Here We Come !

WALT set goals for an upcoming event.
Tomorrow, the Kia Manawanui Syndicate are going to Camp Raglan, 2016 !
I'm so excited for the experience that's been given to me. While I'm at camp, I want to create memories that I'm going to remember forever. I'm going to have the time of my life, and I'm going to have fun with my peers. As this is Week 7, I'm very excited to be going to camp BUT it is also the last four weeks I get to spend with all my friends. This camp experience that has been given to me has to be a good time for me, as another one of my goals is to make these last four weeks last. One thing that I may struggle with at camp is being confident in every I do. One thing I will enjoy ay camp is well..... everything basically. But one thing I will enjoy the most is probably doing the dishes with my cabin. I know that it isn't the best thing to be doing, it's probably the worst, but the reason why is because I'm doing the dishes with my friends and not myself....
I can't wait for tomorrow !

Quakes , Energy & Christchurch

WALT write a reflection about articles we have read in the news from the tech section.

Today after morning tea, we were assigned to choose an article off the New Zealand Herald from the Technology session. The article that I've selected is called "Quakes energy could have powered Christchurch for a year". It's about the disaster that has recently happened in Kaikoura.

The energy released in the Kaikoura earthquake was comparable to what could power Christchurch for an entire year. But..... That's only according to a Canterbury University physics PhD student who had calculated the energy release of the November quake and the combined energy.

John Holdaway's model showed that the energy from the earthquake was nearly half of every quake since 2010 combined. He collected the data for the Geo Net database and then used a decades-old formula to relate the magnitude of earthquakes and their aftershocks from each year to a total energy release.

One thing I enjoyed about this article was that it had a lot of extended vocabulary in there which I was able to change into words I understood. One thing I think I need to work on is researching more information about the subject.

Thanks.

Is Sports Sexist ?

WALT write a reflection about articles we have read in the news.

Today we were assigned an article on a piece of paper. The task was to read the article then answer the questions. The name of the article was "Is sports Sexist?". It is about the problem of the sexism towards the Black Ferns and the All Blacks. The main point of the article was to inform everybody how sexism can effect some.

See, both teams play the same sport, both teams play for the same country BUT the only difference is the gender problem. Yes the Black ferns went and supported Aotearoa at the 2016 RIo Olympics, yes they were supported with a lot of courage from around the world but yet when the Olympics we're over, the Black Ferns were back into the shadow again. People only know who the Black Ferns are, when they've been shown on Television or if the All Blacks are nowhere to be seen but once the spotlight hits them, the Black Ferns are just known as "a team". It's actually really bad because when we were assigned this task, most people didn't even know who the Black Ferns are which is a disappointment.

It says here in the article that it's never the athlete's fault, it's always the social media. Why?
Well the athlete can't control what's put online or who put up what, the athlete's are only responsible for their own actions. It's all to do with the popularity of the sport and the team because if there is a sport that isn't popular they aren't going to air it on television. there was an example in the text. Archery.... Yes, Archery is a really fun sport to watch. However, people barely see it on Television because nobody ever watches it.

After we read the articles we were assigned questions.
Some like Who's the captain of the All Black and Who's the captain of the Black Ferns?
Well....
The Captain of the All Blacks is "Kieran Reid".
The Captain of the Black Ferns is "Fiao'o Fa'amausili.
Some sports that me and my family watch online and at home on t.v are rugby, netball and more.

I really enjoyed reading this article today.
Maybe next time we could do some more research about sexism in sport.

Rating in Movies

WALT write a reflection about articles we have read in the news.

Today we were assigned to read an article that Ms Komor gave us to read. The Article was about the Ratings in Movies. Not the type of ratings where you say whether you enjoyed it or not, the type of rating where the editors think it's appropriate enough for us to watch. Mainly the article was about a woman who made a complaint that her child had come home telling her that his teacher let them watch "Pitch Perfect" which was rated Over-13 years of age when the boy was under the age of 13. Also because the movie contains "Bad Language" and "Inappropriate Scenes" when really there's nothing bad or inappropriate about it.

It also said something about how "Swearing" shouldn't be something to worry about or to punish about. Movies shouldn't have to be rated because of the language in the movie. If the language is not suitable for your child or for you, then just don't watch it. That's the deal.Image result for Emojis

It's the same with reality. Movies are rated according to the use of "Bad Language" or the amount of clothing the actors and actress are actually wearing, or if there's examples of people dealing drugs or being violent towards each other. Those two are acceptable because they're illegal. Taking drugs can mess with your health system and violence is something that shouldn't be going on but...... they're just movies and not reality. People shouldn't be basing things from movie on things that actually matter like health issues or big decision making.

For the author, the personally doesn't like horrors because they creep him out. He doesn't like the blood in them or something like that. HE said that just because he's 40 years old,  he didn't wanna say only 40+ is allowed to watch horror movies. That's just wrong. Movies shouldn't be rated because of 1 person's perspective, it should just be up to the parent's about what their kids watch.

The article wasn't an argument, it was a statement. And it said that all of us have watched a movie with swearing in it (according to age rating). So really, the rating system isn't effective to anyone at all.

After the article we were told turn the page and answer some questions. Questions like "Why do movies have ratings?" and others. One thing I enjoyed about this task was that the topic was interesting and the way the author wrote was incredible. One thing I didn't enjoy was because the activity was all on paper ( apart from this reflection).
