WALA Polynesian Tapa Artist.

Today during our class discussion, we learnt a little on Polynesian Tapa and which artist uses it. My chosen artist was John Pule. I chose Pule because he's well known around New Zealand and I thought he'd be an interesting artist to do. One thing I enjoyed about this task was learning more about the significant artist and something I found a bit challenging was finding correct facts that would actually fit the DLO.

This weeks whakatauki was based on a "grub & a tree". In the metaphor, the grub was us and the tree was life. The deeper meaning between the lines was getting through rough obstacles and achieving new things throughout life. Something I enjoyed about this whakatauki was that the meaning behind it was very powerful and had a lot of context. Something I may need to work on next time is expanding on different ideas for each slide.

Cook Island Language Week!

IALA: the Cook Island Culture and the similarities between my culture and the Cook Island culture.

As you may or may not know, this week is the Cook Island language week so Miss Kyla decided to give us a task related to the culture. Something I enjoyed about this task is that I learnt, not only a lot about the Cook Island culture but also my own as their is a lot of similarities between both cultures. There wasn't anything I didn't enjoy about this task but maybe next time I can try extend my sentences and paragraphs.

Te Reo Maori - T2W7

WAL Maori words for different kai!

This week for Te Reo Maori we were learning and researching about the different type of Kai in te reo!

My favorite part about this task was finding the different names and meanings for each Kai. Something I didn't enjoy much was that I got confused a little on 'Retehi' but after I had actually watched the video did more depth researching I had lifted myself back on track and finished.

Tukumarie - Our Poem!

WALA: The value Tukumarie and how to make wise choices.

Today both Room 9 & 10 learnt more deeper into the meaning of one of our values "Tukumarie"(Tolerance). The definition of Tolerance in my mind is to respect other people's differences and beliefs, and accepting your different peers for where them and their family/ancestors originate from. Something I enjoyed about the task and discussions we had today was that it kind of brang both classes closer as peers and also this has helped me think deeper and harder about the decisions and choices I've been making lately and I'm starting to rethink the goals I've set myself. Something I didn't really enjoy was the parts where our teachers had shared with us that peers from my classroom were being bullied and picked on because of their ethnicity. I enjoyed today's session and hopefully we could come back on it and recap on everything we've learnt and discovered.

My Fale T2W5

WALA the beauty of the samoan culture.

As yous may or may not know, this week is 'Samoan Language Week' and every year for this special week each class has to present something so we've decided to learn more about the spiritual side of Samoa. Here in New Zealand, each tribe or place has their own marae, but in samoa, each village or place has their own 'Fale'. Something I enjoyed about this task was it helped me realise some important values in my life that I need to start cherishing more of those beliefs and that being tolerant towards my culture, ancestors and tangata whenua.

Black Gold With China !

WALA the different events going on around the world.

Today the article we were assigned to is called "Black Gold". It is about people in China, been made to cut their hair off and let others use it for wigs and other accessories. Here is a couple of things I picked up during learning about this article.

I think this article has hidden messages in between the lines. I think that the message is “Don’t hurt innocent people because of what you want’. NZ Herald said that they searched around the whole of China for the founder or man responsible for the problem and finally found him. No more information about him was added EXCEPT that he was forcing woman and young girls to cut their hair off for his products !

To me, The personal purpose of the article was to get the idea of “Humanity” and “Human Rights” in people’s heads because what’s going on around the world isn’t fair and it isn’t right. Everybody should be able to have a say at what’s going on in their lives and if somebody else makes decisions for them that they don’t want to do or go through with, then they should be able to speak up !

I think the reason why the demand for hair is so high is because the hair used for making products is virgin hair. Virgin hair is when you've never dyed your hair and it's all natural. Also because most people around the world have issues with their sculpts and wigs help out so much ! Wigs also help out when someone has cancer and in need of a wig !

Even though wigs are made in negative ways, they really help out around the world ! If we didn't have wigs, then when people around the world are having health issues and they need one because of the loss of hair, they have to live life until it all grows up without any wig warming up their heads and covering up. Another thing is that girls around the world love to use hair extensions to finish up their hairstyle and without those little girls giving hair all the time, ladies hair styles would be incomplete.

A highlight of this article for me would've been the little poem at the beginning of the article. It goes like this......

"The woman with the new hair looks in the mirror and smiles. Her face is framed by 60cm of caramel blonde. The hair feels just like her own; it looks like her own and smells like her own. But it was bought, not grown. A world away in rural China, the girl who lost her hair looks in the mirror and cries."

One thing I didn't enjoy was reading about what those poor little girls had to go through during there lives. If that was my daughter, I would just die her hair so they didn't take it away from her....

Diwali Causes Air Pollution

WALT read and report.

Today for S.S.R we were informed to read and reflect about an article from the "WORLD" section. 

The article that I have chosen today is about how the Annual Diwali festival has caused Air Pollution in Delhi. One thing I enjoyed about this article is how they informed everybody about what, how, where and why Diwali is celebrated. One thing I think I need to work on next time would have to be adding in some more complex sentences and using more figurative language.

Celebration Reflection

WALA celebrations.

This week in class we've been learning about Celebrations.

We did a bus stop activity with heaps of different groups with heaps of different questions.

Here are some of the questions we had to answer:

What is celebrating and what does it mean?

Celebrating means spending quality time with your family, celebrating things in a traditional way and doing things special.

Why do we celebrate?

Because it's a way of remembrance, a day of tradition and a day of family.

How do I celebrate?

FOOD, GAMES & FAMILY.

How does celebrating me you feel?

For me, it makes me feel loved and welcomed when celebrations are happening.

How does celebrating help us in our learning?

Celebrating helps us with cultural language weeks. For example like week, how we're celebrating Niuean Language Week.

How do our values help us celebrate?

By showing "Tukumarie" at different celebrations by respecting all different cultures.

When do we celebrate?

For me three of my most important dates are 25th December, 1st January and 12th June. Christmas, New Years & Matariki ( Maori New Year )

Is Celebrating Important?

Of course celebrating important because as I said, it's a time of remembrance, and a time of quality time with your family and friends.
